Tour of Britain cycle race is coming to the Cotswolds!
Release date: 27 April 2017
Officials at Cotswolds Tourism and Cotswold District Council are celebrating the news that the penultimate stage of the televised OVO Energy Tour of Britain on Saturday 9 September will include several Cotswold locations. This should provide a significant boost for the local tourism sector as crowds flock to see more than 120 professional cyclists, including the world’s elite, vying to win the British crown.
The full tour route was announced on 25 April and organisers confirmed that stage seven of Britain’s premier road cycling event will start in Hemel Hempstead and traverse Buckinghamshire before entering the Cotswolds via Charlbury and Shipton Under Wychwood and continuing to Bourton-on-the-Water before turning up the Fosse Way to Moreton-in-Marsh. Riders will then turn towards Winchcombe and Cleeve Hill before finishing on the Promenade in Cheltenham town centre.
Andy Sanders from Cotswolds Tourism Partnership was very pleased when the news was announced: “The Cotswolds is a superb place for visitors and cyclists of all abilities, offering wonderful countryside, attractions and plenty of cafes and pubs for refreshment. The towns and picturesque villages along the route will be excited to welcome the race and we know it will generate lots of interest in cycling now and into the future. We are hoping that businesses and communities will engage in the event and it will showcase all the area has to offer”.
Cotswold District Council announced in January that they were supporting the bid to bring the leg to the area and contributed £10,000 to the bid. CDC Tourism Manager, Sally Graff, was naturally delighted when the details of stage seven were announced:
“Many local residents will be thrilled to see world-class cyclists up close. Additionally, being part of the event should attract a lot of visitors who have not previously sampled the hospitality and attractions of the Cotswolds, and we will be in touch with businesses to make the most of this opportunity.
“We already know that cycling and exploring the outdoors is a great leisure activity for the whole family and also brings many health benefits. With this in mind, CDC’s Leisure and Communities service will be supporting the Tourism Team’s efforts to raise the profile of cycling and sports events in the Cotswolds.”
Commenting on Stage Seven, OVO Energy Tour of Britain Race Director Mick Bennett added:
“The OVO Energy Tour of Britain has passed through Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds on a number of occasions, but this will be the first stage to finish in the area. The race will showcase the area’s beautiful scenery before finishing in the centre of the spa town of Cheltenham.”
To ensure that businesses, local communities and organisations on the route can learn more about how they can get involved, there will be two meetings in May.

The race is a major cycling event for the UK. It also has the potential to draw a large number of visitors and spectators, bringing considerable economic boost, increased overnight stays and provides the opportunity to showcase the Cotswolds. For example, in 2013 the Sidmouth to Dartmoor stage attracted 188,000 day visitors and 62,000 overnight visitors.
