Way forward agreed to reduce impact of road resurfacing works in Ashcroft Road, Cirencester
Release date: 8 February 2019
Some local residents and businesses will be aware that Gloucestershire County Council arranged for a contractor to resurface Ashcroft Road in Cirencester from Wednesday 13 February to Monday 18 February, with the work scheduled from 9.00 am until 7.00 pm each day.
However, Ashcroft Road is the only route to and from the well-used Brewery Car Park and several business premises. Cotswold District Council has therefore been in discussions with Gloucestershire County Council to find a way of minimising the impact on traders in the town and visitors, as well as reducing the potential traffic chaos arising from the displacement of around 1,000 cars each day into the surrounding areas of Cirencester.
We can confirm that the resurfacing work in Ashcroft Road will now take place on a number of consecutive Sundays (specific dates to be announced soon), and won’t impact on the normal weekly traffic flows. Whilst any work of this nature in a town centre will cause some disruption, we consider moving the work to Sundays will minimise the impact for the majority of people.
CDC Leader Cllr Tony Berry says,
“It is good news that we will soon have a smooth new road surface on Ashcroft Road, but we need to make sure that motorists can still access the Brewery Car Park during the busiest periods and we also want to support businesses in the area. Our officers have done a great job in coming up with the solution, and we are also grateful to County officers for helping to make this happen. I apologise to the residents of Ashcroft Road who may be inconvenienced on Sundays, and I am pleased to offer them the use of the Council’s Trinity Road car park on those days.”
Efforts will also be made to help those with resident parking permits, and attendees at the local churches in the vicinity, during the course of the works. CDC will publicise the new Sunday dates for the resurfacing as soon as they become available.
Please note that resurfacing work at the nearby Querns Lane will go ahead as previously advertised by the County Council - from Friday 15 February to Wednesday 20 February, between the hours of 9.30 am to 3.30 pm.
